Hi,

I am going to upgrade the oracle software from 8.1.7 to 9.2.0( not the database only the software) on the disaster recovery server.I want to know how to check if oracle 9.2.0 is installed in a single command..I came up with the below command for this.. Please let me know if anyone knows a better command to check up with the oracle installation.

cat /var/opt/oracle/oratab | grep prod
*:/appl/oracle/product/8.1.7:N

Thanks much!

Start up sqlplus to see what version it is.
Can you even upgrade the s/w without it upgrading your DB?

Note that your method is not very good at all. What if someone decided to edit your oratab file and change or remove entries?

hi,
We have used dbua tool for upgradation from 9i to 10g.
See whether this tool is available in 8i. if yes, it is better option for upgradation.
The other thing is, u don't have to upgrade s/w and database separately.
Just set the initializatin parameter COMPATIBLE appropriately..
