Hai ,

We need to change the db parameter of one of our database as follows.We are in solaris and oracle 8.1.6

Increase the Buffer Pool to 400MB,
Log Buffer Pool to 3 MB
Sort area size by 50%

currently it is as follows..

Log buffer is 1MB.
And sort_area_size is 1MB also db_block_buffers = 30000.

My doubt is changing these parameter means basically we are using the Physical memory or SWAP or whether increase in the parameter will affect RAM .

or shortly how memory is allocated in oracle for the log_buffer , db_block_buffer and sort_area_size physically or by swap means ..?

and one more thing what is the relation between sort_area_size and sort_retained_size ..?Whether it is having any relation like sort_retained_size = sort_area_size/3

Please throw light on this.

Ready, Fire, Aim!
Based upon what quantifiable benchmark(s) was the above conclusion reached?
If you are uncertain about how the proposed changes will impact the system & the DB's performance, then why are the changes even being considered?
Also V8.1.6 is WAY obsolete & a buggy version at best.

Thanks for ur prompt response.

We find some disk sorts and some more issues when we go thru the statspack report.
SO this change was suggested by a dba.My doubt is simple...
when we increase a parameter like log_buffer, db_block_buffers,and sort_area_size, how the memory is allocated...?

My concern is how the memory space is allocated... like from RAM or phy mem or swap..how...?Please look in this view..

If the disk sorts are not resulting in complaints from users, then what is gained by eliminating them?
Is the goal to eliminate all/every disk sort?
How much time will be gained by eliminating the disk sorts?

we got complaint from the user that the site is slow.So took the statspack and send for analyzing. So DBA suggested the changes..

We want to avoid every disk sorts at the max.. 90%.
