Hi,

We have to upgrade oracle817 on Compaq Tru64 UNIX 4.0 to Oracle920 on HP11i.

We did a trial upgrade process by using exp/imp scripts for the small data(around 1GB) from oracle 817 on Compaq Tru64 UNIX 4.0 to Oracle920 on Windows. It's working fine.

Actually we have a huge data (around 4 TeraByte) to be upgraded in the real scenario to Oracle920 on HP11i.

Is it OK with exp/imp in a piece meal fashion....how much is it reliable... Please suggest me on this...

or is there any way to go about upgrade process with less risks...

Thank you in Advance,
Regards,
Murali.

export / import works only for straight forward data.
It is Not actual upgrade/migration but works seamlessly in most situtations( what happens to your code?)
If you can afford to have a downtime ( export 4 TB database, import data only first, rebuild indexes in parallel, collect the statistics again) you can go for it.
But How sure are with this? Will your code work the same way as before?
Without testing your code, migration with upgrade is dangerous.
Ofcourse, if you are willing to take care of all downtime, prepared for surprises in performance ( the same code may or may not work) you can go with export/import.

I would set up a parallel environment first using materialized views.
Test all my code/application.
If everything is all set, do a final refresh ( downtime will be minimal and definataly lesser than export/import) and switch the users to new environment.

Thank you so much Mahesh Rajendran for your quick reply.

So far I know DBUA, Exp/Imp and Manual Upgrade processes only to upgrade the databases.

From your reply, I came to know about Materialized views (Advanced Replication)I will go through the manuals which are available on net (Oracle9i Advanced Replication Release2(9.2))and get back to you, if I struck up.

Once again Thank you so much for your timely reply

Murali.

Also, please have a look here. Another similiar thread.
It will also take you to Tom Kyte's working example.
