If the database was not shutdown normal, the next time you start it may cause an instance recovery, the instance recovery contains two phases:
rollforward and rollback.
Here is the paragraph extracted from "Oracle9i DBA Fundamentals II" page 6-13 which described the instance recovery:
– Rolling forward recovers data that has not been recorded in the database files, but has been recorded in the online redo log, including the contents of rollback segments.

What I can't understand is "including the contents of rollback segments", I think that Only in rollback phase should the contents of rollback segments be read by SMON and then write it to datafiles. So rolling forward did not need the contents of rollback segments. Am i right ?
