We are trying to do a test upgrade of a database on Unix from 8.1.7 to 9.2.0.5 but we keep coming up with this error when we use the universal installer

"Unable to read /var/opt/oracle/oraInventory/Contents/PatchesList1601.ser. Some inventory information may be lost."

Anyone know how to fix it?
