Hi,

I want to connect from a 8.0.5.-Client (OS w2000) to a 7.3.0.0.0.-db (OS nt4).

tnsping works fine, but when I test the connection in the net8 assistent-tool I get an ora-12203.

Do anybody know if the both versions are compatibel?

And in case of yes where the error could be?

You need SQL*Net to connect to a 7.3.0.0.0 (base release??? I hope you have applied some patches to it...) database. Oracle 7 doesn't know Net8.

Uhhh...sorry, I have to correct!

It's not a 7.3.0.0.0., but a 7.3.2.3.1.!I mixed the version with the compatibility!
But thanks to the answer!
You say Oracle 7 doesn't know Net8, but I connected fom a 8.1.6.-DB to this 7er DB last week. How did this worked?
The 8.1.6. is a standard-installation and I am relativ sure that there was nothing changed!

Shoot! I thought I had it figured...which shows again that I'm just anothe humble developer.

Here's one guess:
- your 8.0.5 client isn't in the same Oracle home as the tnsping utility. Check out what tnsnames.ora file is being used by the 8.0.5 client.

Uh...I don't think so!
Normaly I administrate the DB's with a 9er Client exepted from the 7er, because I read that 9er Client and 7er DB don't work together.
The 8.1.6. Db was on an other server and I used it to control the 7er. But this server is now slowly collapsing, so I have to find alternatives!
First I installed (with problems during installation) the 8.0.5. Client on my pc, but both clients doesn't work really good together (there I really had trouble with my tnsnames.ora) and I wasn't still able to connect to the 7er.
Then I installed the 8.0.5.er Client on a virtual machine on my pc, but it doesn't works! So you see, actually it is not possible that there is something wrong about the oracle home directory!
Maybe other suggests? Everything is helpfull!
